Network Services - File Server & Storage
File System Access & Storage Security
Access to LAN disks is fully controlled by your login information. What you see and what you have access to is completely controlled by parameters that were assigned when your LAN account was created. Novell Netware (our LAN operating system) is by far the most secure networking OS on the market. Your files are most likely safer and more secure when stored on these file servers than they are on your own PC!
Department Assignment
When you log in to the Linden LAN, you are automatically assigned to a department group (PPATH, ENTO, or NUTRISCI). This grants you full access to your Department_Share directory. THIS FOLDER IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE by members of your department (accessible to EVERYONE in your department).
Departmental Workgroup Assignment
The login process also assigns you to a workgroup within the department (either Faculty, Students, Staff, or Office). This assignment adds you to either the Faculty, Staff, Students, or OfcStaff email mailing lists.
Home Folder
You are also assigned a home folder that has your login ID as a folder name. This folder is only accessible by you!
Your user ID and password authenticate you to access file storage areas and network services based appropriate to your workgroup. The Novell Netware client automatically creates "alias" disk drives for your convenience while you are logged in to the system. These drives appear to your computer as if they were disk drives installed directly in your machine.
By default, you will have access to several drives, which can include:
- [H] Your personal area for any of your documents.
- [I] A Shared area for any groups that you are a part of. Your H drive folder is also stored in this directory.
- [P] A repository of applications and other resources you may wish to use.
- [T] A public drive for placing anything you wish into. Everyone can see everything in this drive.
Accessing Your Files From Off-Campus
Windows Explorer has the ability to make links with remote servers for the purposes of accessing and transferring files to/from a server. Our servers are setup to utilize this functionality, and to give you complete access to all folders that you would have access to when normally logged in to Novell Netware
